Columbus' crew carried diseases that decimated New World Indians. Their revenge, so it goes, was to send syphilis back to Europe. New evidence may refute this, and help explain how new diseases are dealt with today. A medieval skeleton from an English priory shows signs of syphilis, but in the 1340s; long before 1492. Forensic, archaeological, and medical experts study how diseases spread and mutate, perhaps resolving an age-old mystery.
